Baptism

Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua),  and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.” (CCC 1213)

INFANTS And CHILDREN (under 8 years of age)

Families and sponsors prepare together for the Sacrament of Baptism for infants and children. Baptisms in English are held on the 2nd Sunday of the month at 1:15 PM.

Please note that we do not perform private baptisms. You must be a registered active parishioner of Mary Star of the Sea, La Jolla in order to receive the sacrament of baptism at our parish.

CHILDREN

Children who are of the age of reason (age 8 by March 1) that would like to receive the Sacrament of Baptism may do so through the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC) They spend time in study, prayer and worship so they are able to discern if they would like to receive the sacraments.

SPONSORS

The Church teaches that choosing the godparents invites serious consideration.  Although it’s the role of the entire Body of Christ to help the newly baptized on the road of Christian life, the godparent holds special honor and responsibility (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1255).

In infant/child baptism, a sponsor’s role is to help the child live a Christian life . In the case of adult baptism, the sponsor’s role is to assist the person in Christian initiation. Sponsors must be an active Catholic in good standing .
